Let’s be honest - relationships can be tricky. Sometimes, even the strongest couples hit a rough patch and need a little extra support to navigate the bumps. That’s where couples counselling steps in, offering a safe space to talk, understand, and grow together. Getting support is not an indication you've failed as a couple, it's an investment in your relationship and a commitment to grow into the team you both crave. If you’re in Milton and wondering about your options, you’re in the right place. I’m here to walk you through the ins and outs of couples counselling, tailored just for you.
Exploring Couples Therapy Options in Milton
When it comes to couples therapy, there’s no one-size-fits-all approach. Different couples have different needs, and luckily, the Lemonade Stand offers an approach to therapy to suit those needs. Whether you’re dealing with communication breakdowns, trust issues, or just want to strengthen your bond, there’s something for everyone.
Some approaches and tools I've found to be helpful in working with couples:
Relationship Enrich Assessment: This is an online questionnaire that each person completes that covers different aspects of your relationship (communication, conflict resolution, approach to finances, etc). It then compares the responses and highlights potential growth areas.
Trauma-Informed: If you and your partner have experienced trauma in your lives, this can have a significant impact on your relationship. I have experience in providing trauma-informed care and using this lens to navigate the complex ways trauma can impact couples' interactions.
Gender Roles, Male-Friendly: Let's be honest, more often than not, men struggle believing that therapy will actually make a difference in their relationship. Most men I've worked with also tend to trust that a male counsellor may better understand their perspective. Whether this is true or not, as a man I find I can often speak to these concerns from a first-hand perspective and I work hard to put their minds at ease so they can feel free to be open and honest in our session.
Neurodiversity-Affirming Therapy: For couples where one or both partners are neurodivergent, this approach respects and embraces neurological differences while addressing relationship challenges.

What Happens During Couples Counselling?
If you’ve never been to couples counselling before, you might be wondering what actually goes down in those sessions. Spoiler alert: it’s not like a dramatic TV show fight scene (thankfully).
Typically, I will start by getting to know both of you - your history, your challenges, and your goals. Then, sessions usually involve:
Open communication exercises: Learning to listen and speak without judgment.
Conflict resolution strategies: Tools to handle disagreements constructively.
Emotional awareness: Understanding your own feelings and your partner’s.
Homework: Yes, sometimes you’ll get little tasks to practice at home (don’t worry, nothing too scary or time-consuming).
The whole point is to create a safe, supportive environment where both partners feel heard and valued. And if you’re neurodivergent or have specific mental health challenges, I will look to adapt techniques to fit your needs.
Is couples counselling covered by OHIP?
Now, here’s a question I get asked a lot: Is couples counselling covered by OHIP? The short answer is: not usually. OHIP (Ontario Health Insurance Plan) generally doesn’t cover couples therapy sessions. However, there are some exceptions if counselling is part of a broader mental health treatment plan or provided through certain community health centres.
That said, I can offer sliding scale fees for those in financial need and as an RP(Q) my services are covered by extended health benefits from your insurance provider. It’s worth checking with your insurance company to see what options you have. Investing in your relationship is important, and there are ways to make it more affordable.
Could I be the right Couples Counsellor in Milton for you?
Choosing a couples counsellor can feel a bit like dating - you want to find the right fit, someone you both feel comfortable with. Here are some tips to help you pick the best match:
Look for experience with your specific needs: If you or your partner are neurodivergent, finding a therapist who understands that is critical.
Credentials, experience: I am registered with the CRPO as a psychotherapist (qualifying) but I also have nearly two decades of relationship counselling in spiritual care contexts (often providing marriage preparation sessions).
Trust your gut: The first session is a good time to see if you feel safe and understood. I always tell my clients that it's important they feel comfortable and heard - and that may mean looking for a different therapist if they don't feel the fit is right.
Consider logistics: Location, availability, and fees matter too. My in-person sessions are offered just outside Milton and I have experience providing couples counselling virtually as well.
Remember, it’s okay to try a few therapists before settling on one. Your relationship deserves the best support possible.

Making the Most of Your Couples Counselling Experience
Counselling is a journey, not a quick fix. To get the most out of it, here are some practical tips:
Be open and honest: Vulnerability can be scary but it’s the foundation of progress.
Show up consistently: Regular sessions build momentum.
Practice outside sessions: Use the tools and exercises your therapist gives you.
Be patient: Change takes time, and that’s okay.
Support each other: Remember, you’re a team working towards a healthier relationship.
If you’re feeling nervous, that’s totally normal. Just think of counselling as a chance to hit the refresh button on your relationship.
